Fighter pay is one of the touchiest subjects among those who are currently on the UFC roster. Many fighters in the past, such as the likes of José Aldo, Nate Diaz, and even world champions like Demetrious Johnson have expressed their grievances about the money they are taking home.
The Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission recently released the payouts for the UFC on FOX 29 card last Saturday, which was headlined by lightweight standouts Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Per MMA Imports who reported the news, “The Diamond” took home $170,000, which includes an $85,000 win bonus. Gaehtje, meanwhile, took home $110,000 after losing via fourth-round TKO.
What was quite interesting to see, however, is the salaries that co-main event fighters Carlos Condit and Alex Oliveira took home. As noted on the payout sheet, “The Natural Born Killer” managed to take home $115,000, while “Cowboy” only took home $100,000, and that already includes his $50,000 bonus for Performance of the Night. This, despite the fact that it was Condit who ended up being bloodied up and forced to submission in the second round of their fight.
It could all be pointed to several factors: firstly, Condit is a former interim champion, a long-time veteran, and is ranked at the top 15 of the UFC’s welterweight division at number 12. Oliveira, on the other hand, has yet to crack the top 15, and is a relatively unknown fighter outside of Brazil. It did not matter if Condit is now on a four-fight win streak, which for journeymen fighters, could mean an instant release from the UFC roster.
Undefeated middleweight Israel Adesanya also took home quite a huge sum, totaling to $106,000, and this already includes his win bonus amounting to $53,000. Opponent Marvin Vettori, meanwhile, took home a total of $20,000.
For the strawweight fighters on the card, Michelle Waterson took home a total of $80,000, which already comprised the $40,000 that is due her for her win bonus. Opponent Cortney Casey, on the other hand, bagged a total of $33,000.
The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 alum Brad Tavares also took home $80,000, which was comprised of a $40,000 win bonus. His opponent Krzysztof Jotko, meanwhile, took home a total of $36,000.
