If you’re having a bad day, this sweet little bit of mixed martial arts wholesomeness might turn your day all the way around.
UFC lightweight and welterweight veteran Diego Sanchez has proved that dreams really can come true by participating in a mixed martial arts exhibition fight with a young fighter from his gym who suffers from Down syndrome.
Isaac “The Shermanator” Marquez’ dream was to fight in the cage, but unfortunately, no commission would allow him to fight due to his disability, so Sanchez found a way to fulfil that wish.
Marquez trains at the Jackson Wink MMA Academy with Sanchez, who worked with the academy to set up a Jackson Wink Fight night which would allow Marquez to fight in the cage without needing commission approval.
Both fighters were cheered on by the crowd, with Marquez receiving a particularly warm reception. Soon the fight was on, with Marquez hunting the UFC star across the Octagon, throwing jabs before being tied up in a clinch.
The scrappy young fighter would drop down for a double leg and nail it, driving Sanchez to the canvas before taking side control and landing some ground and pound. Marquez would then roll for a triangle attempt before the two men came back to their feet.
Marquez would follow Sanchez to the ground, where the two would have a fantastic grappling exchange. “Issac!” screamed the crowd as he began to cinch up a tight armbar on the veteran UFC star to submit him in the very first round.
The crowd would go absolutely wild for the young fighter as he realised his dream of fighting in the octagon. Both fighters would celebrate together in the cage, which was truly heartwarming to see. Sanchez would later comment on the fight, explaining that he wanted to show the world that anything is possible.
“I just wanted everyone to know that Isaac had a dream and he went after it, and he earned it, and he got it. So anybody out there: If you have a dream, believe in yourself and go for it.”
