The country was shocked when a terrorist murdered 49 people in Orlando, Florida. On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen entered Pulse nightclub, opening fire on the 300+ attendees. It was one of the worst terror attacks on U.S. soil in recent history. While Mateen is dead, his wife faces charges, and a judge made a major announcement about her trial.
Omar Mateen was an American, born to immigrant parents. He enjoyed all the freedoms this country could offer. Yet, he was still poisoned by evil beliefs, the same beliefs that have inspired radical Islamic terrorists around the world.
When he went on his shooting spree, he pledged allegiance to ISIS. He even took the time to call 911 and post on Facebook. His wife will stand trial for providing material support for the terrorist. Her lawyers had tried to move the trial away from Orlando. They claimed that they could not get a fair trial, due to the local media coverage.
However, a judge did not agree. It was announced that Noor Salman’s trial will be held in Orlando, the scene of her husband’s terrible acts.
The wife of Omar Mateen, the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub last year in the name of ISIS, will stand trial in the Florida city, a judge ordered Wednesday.
Noor Salman’s attorneys had filed a motion in September to have her trial moved to another city, claiming that media coverage of her husband’s attack and remarks from Orlando Police Chief John Mina wouldn’t allow her to have a fair trial, according to WESH.
Salman has been charged with providing material support to a terror organization and obstruction of justice, the Orlando Sentinel reported. [Source: Fox News]
The shooting at Pulse Nightclub left a scar on our country. It reminded us, once again, that our fight against radical, Islamic terror is not over. These vile people continue to find ways to enter our country. They will not stop until the United States is under their rule. It also was a wake-up call to many gay Americans. The shooting showed them that the left’s approach to handling terrorism does not work.
According to reports, Mateen’s wife provided quite a bit of support for the man prior to the attack.
Salman knew about her husband’s plan before the shooting and how he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terror group, prosecutors said. She shopped with her husband the night before the attack when he bought five containers of ammunition, a source close to the investigation told Fox News. [Source: Fox News]
It’s sickening to think of what they did. Salman agreed to aid this man in his mission of death. Instead of opposing him, perhaps reporting him, she helped arm Mateen.
The trial is a crucial step in finding justice for the many who were hurt and killed. With Mateen dead, someone must be held accountable. This trial will ensure that Salman will face the consequences for what she did.
The motion filed for Salman, according to the Sentinel, cited remarks made by the police chief, one of which said: “I am glad to see that Omar Mateen’s wife has been charged with aiding her husband in the commission of the brutal attack on the Pulse nightclub.”
The statement stems from comments Mina made when Salman was arrested in January. He said her arrest provides “some relief in knowing that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime.”
The judge’s order quoted a U.S. Supreme Court ruling which said, “prominence of media coverage does not necessarily produce prejudicing and juror impartiality does not require ignorance,” WESH reported. [Source: Fox News]
So much has happened in our country since this shooting. However, the pain felt by those who lost loved ones will never go away. Perhaps this trial will bring a little bit of comfort — or at least some closure.
As is often the case following such an attack, those of us not directly affected tend to move on and slowly forget. By the time those who are responsible are brought to trial and the facts become known, we aren’t paying much attention anymore. It’s time we remember so history does not repeat itself. We need to pay attention, although the left would rather we blindly move along. We must keep a close eye on this case because it’s bound to set precedence, and as Americans, we must demand that a strong message is sent to those who allow Islamic terrorism to occur. They will be held accountable.
