It looks like now the most popular heavyweight boxing champion right now might also be in the sights of a popular mixed martial artist.
Anthony Joshua may not be as defensively minded as Floyd Mayweather, but he certainly puts on a show.
Joshua is currently pursuing bouts with WBC champion Deontay Wilder and WBO heavyweight king Joseph Parker in order to unify the heavyweight titles of the world, before possibly even taking on Tyson Fury when he returns to the ring. Now, one of the most terrifying heavyweights in the UFC wants a shot at Joshua.
The worlds of boxing and mixed martial arts were forever changed with the advent of Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s boxing super fight against UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Mayweather took the popular mixed martial artist to the tenth round, with the Irishman initially outperforming his opponents in the opening half of the bout before succumbing to fatigue and being TKO’d by the much more experienced Mayweather.
The veteran boxer even recently admitted to “carrying” McGregor into deep waters in order to ensure fans felt they had gotten the spectacle they’d paid for.
Some would think that this matchup would serve as a lesson to other prospective mixed martial artists hoping to make big money by crossing over to boxing, but instead, it seems to have fuelled the fires of interest.
Francis Ngannou has blown through the UFC heavyweight division, winning his last six fights by stoppage and putting the UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic on notice. The French-Cameroonian knock out machine destroyed popular kickboxer Alistair Overeem in the first round of their fight over the weekend with a vicious punch, before calling for a title shot.
“He has punching power,” said Ngannou’s coach, Dewey Cooper, following the bout. “Anyone that has that equaliser will fare well. If he spends more time and takes it seriously, trains hard, he could be a champ in boxing also.”
“Everyone was so enthralled about the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather fight. I’d like to see Francis about one year from now fight whoever the heavyweight champion is, whether it be Deontay Wilder of Anthony Joshua. That would be a real fight, where an MMA fighter could go in there and upset a current boxing champion.”
Would you be down to see Francis Ngannou head over to boxing to take on someone as dangerous as Anthony Joshua, the man who retired Wladimir Klitschko? Let us know in the comments!
